Phtechaburi is home to what could very well be Thailand’s best dessert shop.
Just over two and a half hours southwest in the car from Bangkok, it makes for a wonderful stop on the way to the beach resort town of Hua Hin. With Myanmar across the border to the west and the Gulf of Thailand to the east, you could easily stay longer here, too. Inedible highlights include exploring the with Buddha statues and shrine buried within Tham Khao Luang limestone cave and Phetchaburi’s historical temples, palaces, national parks and beaches.
The streets are lined with teak shophouses. There are plenty of spots to fuel up beside locals if you’re hungry, simply look for wherever is busiest around lunchtime. Keep an eye out for Phetchaburi’s specialty sweet treat, khanom mor gaeng. It’s a Portuguese-influence egg custard made with coconut milk, palm sugar and mung bean similar to a flan. I don’t recommend sharing.
